Temporary class visas
Work Visas
- Options for Employers: There are different options available to New Zealand employers who are willing to support the right candidate to obtain visas with the rights to work in the country. An employer could support the worker for a permanent residence visa under the Skilled Migrant Category described here if the employment is on indefinite term. If the job offered is only available for a certain period of time, then an employer could support your potential worker's application under the Essential Skills Work Visa or the Post Study Work Visa - Employer Assisted. The employer must meet different sets of requirements under each option. However, if the potential worker resides overseas at the time the application is lodged, the first step is to apply for an approval in principle (AIP) to recruit oversea workers.
- Options for Workers: Persons who have secured a job offered could apply for a work visa under the Essential Skills Work Visa or the Post Study Work Visa - Employer Assisted or a country specific visa scheme. Each of these visa types has its own requirements. For example, one of the requirements is under the Essential Skills Work Visa your employer must show they were not able to find a New Zealand citizen or a permanent residence visa holder to fill your position; whereas under the latter you must have completed study for a recognised qualification in New Zealand. In addition, there is certain work visa type available to specific countries, for example if a chef or an engineering professional and a citizen of Vietnam may qualify for a 3 year work visa; or a nurse or an engineering professional and a citizen of the Philippines may also qualify for a work visa for the same duration. It is important to note that a licence is required to work in nursing and engineering professional in New Zealand; and that the quota for the number of work visas allocated to a country can be exhausted any time. If someone does not have a job offer but his/her partner is a work visa holder or a student visa holder, the person may qualify for a work visa (not all student visa holder can be a sponsor). Requirements for each type of work visa are different.

The applicant is also expected to meet health and character requirements.
