Entrepreneur Residence Visas:
The entrepreneur residence (ER) visa is a point-based system in which points are awarded for a range of factors. These include, among others, the applicant's business experience and capital investment; the benefit of his/her business to New Zealand (measured by the number of full-time positions the proposed business will create).
First step: the applicant needs to score at least 120 points to be granted an Entrepreneur Work Visa (EW) which comprises of the Start-up stage to enable the applicant to set-up his/her business in New Zealand and Entrepreneur Balance stage to allow the applicant to run his/her business. The critical elements of an EW application are the business plan and a minimum capital investment of $100,000 (It is important to note that this minimum amount does not include funds the applicant must have to support himself/herself and others included in the application while they are in New Zealand during the duration of the EW without relying on any business income).
Second step: the holder of an EW may be qualified for an Entrepreneur Residence Visa after two years or six months holding an EW visa. To qualify for the latter, two of the requirements are (i) the applicant must have invested $500,000 in his/her business and (ii) created three full time jobs for New Zealand citizens or residents.

Investor Residence Visas: As its name suggests, the focus is on the amount of funds a potential immigrant can invest in New Zealand.
- Investor category: This category requires, among others, a minimum fund of NZD1.5 million to be invested for 4 years and NZD1 million in available settlement fund, evidence of English language competency (IELTS 4.0 or equivalent) and an age limit of 65. The time required to be in New Zealand is 165+ days a year in each of the 4 year investment period.
- Investor plus category: this category requires, among others, a minimum investment fund of NZD10 million to be invested in an "acceptable investment" for at least 3 years. The English language and age requirements are waved, and the time spent in New Zealand is reduced to only 44 days in a year.
